【Potion, Rank F】

Painkiller. Salve.

[Remarks] Even among the numerous restorative medicines, it is the one with the weakest effectiveness. However, among the common populace, it is taken before consulting a doctor. Frequently applied as an ointment. The taste may vary depending on the maker.

[Compounding Ingredients] Epala leaf, Rouna root, Sacred Water

In other words, it’s like a home remedy in a sense. Like every home has it, sort of. 

According to the Adventurer’s Manual, there are four types of restorative medications. The lowest ranking Potion, High Potion, Elder Portion, and Redial.

Starting with High Potion, the price suddenly goes up; a single bottle of High Potion is equivalent to 10,000 Reib. Effective for lacerations, bruises, burns, sprains and such, as long as it is a light injury, it can completely cure it.

Elder Potion is highly valued by top ranking adventurers and in battlefields. It is said to be around 100,000 Reib or more, and is seldom seen by the common populace. As long as one is not dead, even cut off limbs can be completely restored. If one drinks it, it can replace lost blood, even fast-acting poisonous drugs can be dispersed, they say.

Amazing.

Redial is a legendary restorative medicine. Only its name is what is left of it though, it no longer exists now.

At this point, I thought this world might not need doctors but it turns out that only those who specialize in 『Healing Arts』can handle something so expensive.

By the way, those who do medical treatment through magic are 『Healing Technique Users』. Powerful Healing Technique Users are mostly employed by nobles or affiliated with the Knight Order. They specialize in treating royalty, so the ones that take care of commoners are mainly Healing Arts Users.

The ones who make restorative medicines are 『Medicine Masters』. Medicine Masters are also alchemists, and without a certain amount of skill, they will not be able to produce effective medicines.

Still, no matter how powerful the medicine or magic, the dead can never be revived, it seems. Since they are able to re-attach severed limbs, I thought something like revival should be possible too.

When I returned to the inn, I gave the mushrooms and edible wild plants I collected, to the landlady and the old man, who was in the kitchen.

When I said it was thanks for their service, they were delighted as it turns out that the ones I collected were all fresh and with good appearance.

Since I unknowingly collected something like black pepper, when I said I’d give it to them too, they said they will use it after processing it. Because it was a valuable seasoning, on the contrary, they felt sorry for taking it; but that’s no big deal, they could just feed me a good meal again.

More importantly, Jerome’s request which I accepted unknowingly. It’s my first other-world quest, so I have quite a few apprehensions.

The most puzzling of all is the forest where I picked up a variety of things. Apparently, I heard that monsters from rank F to D frequently appear. Please tell me that a bit sooner.

By the way, it seems that the difference between an animal and a monster is in whether or not they can absorb magic essence.

In this world, magic essence is integrated in the atmosphere, and exists everywhere. The ‘animals’ that absorb those magic essences are called monsters, and there exists those that can use that magic essence. Apparently those that can use magic essence are a bit more intelligent than other monsters, and it seems that among those, there are some that can use language, and telepathic communication. Telepathic communication is said to be something like telepathy*.

[*T/N: this was written in katakana in the raws, so he’s saying the actual English word.]

“So my use of magic means I am also absorbing magic elements, huh.”

What magic elements are, what magic is, those finer details don’t really matter. 

In this world, things like those exist. That’s good enough. Just use what can be used. It does not produce air pollution through fossil fuels or chemical fuels, so is it not great that it is eco-friendly and good for the environment?

So, I did not encounter the aforementioned monster even once; I wonder why?

 

 

“Change of clothes, check. Restorative medicine, check. Waterskins x10, check…… as expected, did I bring too much water? But I don’t really know what could happen after all……”

The day after the next, I made my preparations for the trip and left the village.

Is what I say, but with a convenient bag I can put anything in, I just look like I’m about to take a walk nearby. 

When I told the landlady about the situation, she made it so that I will not be charged for the several days when I am away from the inn. They seem to consider the wild plants and mushroom varieties I gave as credit.

The mountain where mythril ore can be gathered, is said to take two days one-way on foot.

Uwaa. How do I say this, it feels incredibly far. For a distance of two days for one-way, just how far away is that. If I try hard enough, I could walk around 30 kilometers in a day at most, right? And at night, I sleep and have to stop for meals.

Well, the moment I heard that the means of transportation would either be by horse or carriage, I had a bad premonition. But considering I have never ridden a horse, and cannot conveniently get a carriage out, then walking is my only choice. Damn, Jerome.

I requested an order of ten lunchboxes from the inn’s landlady. Of course, I paid for the regular fee. I might be bringing too much for a four-day round trip schedule, but I have to be as sure as can be.

The inside of my bag is complete with several lumps of meat, all sorts of seasonings, a large pot and small pot for camping, and a kitchen knife. After all, I can use search to easily get my hands on wild plants and mushrooms that can be eaten raw.

My only equipment is an iron short sword. There was no long swords being sold, and I do not know how to handle one. I’ll walk while continuously wishing ‘Monsters, don’t come out’. 

As I proceeded through the highway after leaving the village, a prairie immediately spread out.

It seems that this place, including Tolmi village, is called the Great Plains of Belkia. I became uneasy with the landscape that was empty as far as the eyes can see.

In Japan, no matter how much of a nature-abundant land it could be, there would still be electrical lines and helicopters flying around.

There really is nothing. Just the forest, woods, and prairie. 

Maybe I could not honestly enjoy it or think it’s wonderful because I yearn for the world where science and technology has been developed.

“It’s gentle on the eyes.”

I muttered and nodded while I moved forward alone.

I could take Teacher Search at this point but, my wallet is loaded at the moment so I’ll continue walking.

I was not just walking, I was also trying to precisely analyse Search.

As I cast Search to its maximum output, everything I saw around me ended up lighting up. This means that even a single stone from the roadside has some utility value. However, it will not sell.

When I focused my consciousness on marketable things, the previous red, white and green indicators came up, and when I focused on items above C-Rank, most of them disappeared. This means that things above C-Rank won’t just fall on the roadside.

I also discovered many different kinds of Life Magic.

First, 『Dry』generates a gust of wind similar to a hair dryer. It will probably come in handy after washing my hair. When I exerted more strength into 『Wind』it evolved into 『Tornado』and developed into 『Cyclone』. It looked like it might turn into a large-scale calamity so I got flustered. This isn’t something you could recklessly and thoughtlessly use.

Next, I invented 『Lighter』. When I snapped my right thumb and forefinger, a small flame like that of a cigarette lighter came out. This one as well can evolve from 『Flame』to 『Furan*』and then it became 『Flamma*』.  This one is also catastrophical.

*T/N: Furan is a flammable liquid chemical; the original raws use the characters for hardness 「剛」and flame 「炎」. Flamma, according to google, means flame or blaze. The raws literally mean red hot flame 「灼熱炎」.

Although it’s scary that it developed more into Offensive Magic rather than Life Magic, if it can be used for self-defense, then it something I should learn.

I’d have to be thankful to Gaming knowledge for this.

As long as you’ve got the basics down, all you need to do is application. For example, if you heat water up with Flame thereby generating water vapour, and cool it down in one go with Wind, a splendid 『Nebel*』is born. [*T/N: German for fog]

As for the rest, I’ll think of them as they come to mind, I wonder if this much should be fairly enough for self-defense.  As much as possible, I’d rather not use them but I’m sure there will be times when it’s unavoidable.

Leaving that aside, I was having so much fun creating flame and water out of nowhere, that I did another peerless running skip without noticing. 

If someone saw me, I would have perfectly seemed like a suspicious person. But thanks to my peerless skipping, I arrived at the White Wood Forest in the afternoon of that day.

No, it was said that it takes a whole day to get here…… just how high is my Physical Ability?

Before the sun sets, I prepare to set camp.

I found a place that was a blind spot from the highway, and hardened the spot by treading on it. I took out the bed sheet and pot from the bag. I dissolved the seasoning, which will serve as the soup base, in the hot water within the pot, once I put in the sliced meat, the simple meat soup will be completed. As I added in the wild grasses that I pulled out along the way, it became vivid.

By the way, the water in the pot was heated up using a magic stone that was created through the condensation of magic essence. When I focused my consciousness on a stone that has the effect of heating up things, it came out. It was unexpectedly simple. I am curious about how the Manual Book said that magic stones are precious. Even though they are so easy to make.

I took four magic stones with a boundary effect, and placed them on four corners.

” 『Activate』“

When I chanted so, a thin, dome-shaped, glass-like film was created. Good, good, it came out exactly as I imagined.

The magic stone with heating effects was made to maintain a constant temperature so, there is no risk of the pot blowing up. The simmering soup that looked deliciously well-boiled provoked my appetite.

I’ve been living alone for a long time so cooking is my forte. This time, it’s only a simple meat soup, but next time, it should be alright to put in more effort. I’m sure Teacher Search will teach me what things can be used for seasoning. 

“Itadakimasu*” *[T/N: I don’t want to use the English equivalent.]

I put my hands together in thanks for today’s provision.

The simply-made meat soup is fairly delicious. The consomme-like flavor in the meat’s soup base matches irresistibly well. The soup base is just yummy. I can’t get enough of the crunchy texture of the wild grasses that was randomly picked along the way as well. 

While I was at it, I ate one of the special lunchboxes, and my hunger was subdued. I could still eat some more, but I restrained myself. 

I did not feel any heat or coolness, but I covered myself with a blanket.

While gazing at the sky full of stars, I chanted 『Clean』, and bitterly smiled at how even my teeth became squeaky clean.

It’s no wonder science hasn’t developed. Magic is way too convenient.

Unless you aim not to depend on it for everything, then an ultimate good-for-nothing human would be completed. I have a feeling I would move around while lying down just because it’s troublesome.

Waking up in the morning, properly getting ready, and walking on my own feet. I don’t want to be overweight, so as much as I can, I have to do what can be done on my own.

The next day, I woke up the moment the Saturn-sun had completely risen.

The White Wood Forest that spread out before me was a forest of Japanese white birch.

Gigantic trees with white tree trunks luxuriously grew in abundance as they stood sky-high, towering far above the surroundings. Because of that, the sky is hidden behind a blue-green world, and it is absurdly dim despite it being morning. To be honest, I do not want to enter a forest such as this. This is not even at the proportion of Fuji’s woodlands.

Although it is said to be a place where mythril ore can be mined, rather than a forest, it’s a mountain. White trees grew all over the place as far as can be seen, I did not know how large the scale of it was. 

According to the map, moving straight eastward from here would bring me out to a ravine. Apparently, one can gather mythril ore close to there. 

That sort of place where a very profitable ore can be collected should be under the management of a country or territory, but this place is also called by another name: 『Forest of the Ancient Dragon』, and is said to be a danger zone where monsters run rampant.

…….. that old man, he actually sent me to that kind of place, huh.

But something like a dragon…… does make one’s blood boil a bit, doesn’t it….

If it were someone like an A-Rank adventurer, they would not fall behind monsters, but there is no material collection specialist with that kind of skill in the first place. The fact that they’re a collector means that they specialize in collecting and not in fighting.

Mythril is a valuable raw material. The only ones who can find it are those with both knowledge and experience. Consequently, in this forest that is earnestly avoided by both adventurers and material collectors, if you risk your life for it, instantly striking it rich won’t just be a dream, will it? It is being left alone with the idea of ‘if you die, it’s none of my business though’.

That just means that mythril ore is just that valuable. In games, it quite often is a weapon that can be obtained during openings but, I guess it’s different here.

Now then, I guess let’s head there to collect it.
